Case #39

Findings

  • Extensive skin thickening and subcutaneous edema throughout the imaged right breast without discrete mass or fluid collection

Diagnosis

Mastitis

Sample Report

Findings are most suggestive of mastitis involving the right breast. If symptoms fail to improve as expected with antibiotic treatment, skin punch biopsy may be required to exclude the less likely possibility of inflammatory breast cancer.

Discussion

  • Remember that even in seemingly straightforward cases of mastitis, clinical followup should be recommended at minimum with the recommendation for skin punch biopsy if symptoms persist longer than expected given the potential imaging overlap between mastitis and inflammatory breast cancer
