Case #14

Findings

  • Abnormal separation of loops of jejunum in the left hemiabdomen without evidence of bowel obstruction
  • No abnormal intraabdominal mass effect or calcification

Diagnosis

  • Enteritis

Sample Report

Abnormal separation of loops of jejunum in the left hemiabdomen without evidence of bowel obstruction. Though nonspecific, these findings may relate to enteritis.

No abnormal intraabdominal mass effect or calcification.

Discussion

  • Enteritis and colitis often have a nonspecific (or normal) appearance on radiographs
  • Some findings to look for include mild segmental dilation and abnormal separation of bowel loops (due to wall thickening and/or mesenteric edema)
  • It is probably best not to comment on pneumoperitoneum (unless you think it is present obviously) on supine radiographs given their poor sensitivity for free air
