Case #19

Findings

  • Overall paucity of bowel gas with focal mild gaseous distension of a loop of small bowel in the right lower quadrant
  • No evidence of free intraperitoneal air
  • No abnormal intraabdominal mass effect or calcification
  • No acute findings in the chest

Diagnosis

  • Intussusception

Sample Report

Overall paucity of bowel gas with focal mild gaseous distension of a loop of small bowel in the right lower quadrant. Findings are nonspecific. Consider ultrasound to further evaluate for intussusception if there is clinical concern.

No evidence of free intraperitoneal air.

No abnormal intraabdominal mass effect or calcification.

No acute findings in the chest.

Discussion

  • Think about abdominal radiographs in patients for whom there is clinical concern for intussusception in three categories: normal (i.e. low suspicion for intussusception), nonspecific, and suspicious. This case is nonspecific
  • Ultrasound confirmed intussusception in this case
