Case #20

Findings

  • Round radiopaque structure with a subtle inner lucent ring overlies the right upper quadrant
  • Nonobstructive bowel gas pattern
  • No evidence of acute cardiopulmonary disease

Diagnosis

  • Ingested foreign body (button battery)

Sample Report

Ingested foreign body overlies the left upper quadrant, with radiographic appearance concerning for a button battery.

Discussion

  • It is very important to be able to distinguish a button battery from a coin, as button battery must be more aggressively removed (particularly if in the esophagus). In the small bowel, they are often monitored closely with serial imaging to spontaneous passage
  • Button batteries have a characteristic bilaminar appearance with a thin internal relatively radiolucent rim
